Description

Chicken Cordon Bleu is a classic dish featuring tender boneless chicken breasts rolled around savory slices of ham and Swiss cheese. The rolls are coated in a seasoned breadcrumb crust, pan-fried to a golden brown, and then baked to perfection for a juicy, flavorful meal that’s sure to impress.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Filling

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices of ham (or your preferred choice of meat)
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese

Breading and Seasoning

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Cooking Fats

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the chicken later.
  2. Prepare chicken rolls: Lay the chicken breasts flat and place a slice of ham and Swiss cheese on each. Roll up carefully to enclose the filling, securing with toothpicks if needed.
  3. Set up breading stations: In one shallow dish, mix flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Place beaten eggs in a second dish, and breadcrumbs in a third.
  4. Bread the chicken rolls: Coat each roll first in the flour mixture, then dip into the eggs, and finally roll in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to form an even crust.
  5. Pan-fry chicken rolls: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add chicken rolls and cook 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Bake to finish cooking: Transfer browned rolls to a baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes until chicken is cooked through and cheese melts completely.

Notes

  • Use toothpicks to keep the chicken rolls securely closed during cooking to prevent filling leakage.
  • Make sure the chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for safety.
  • For a crispier crust, you can double-dip the chicken rolls in the egg and breadcrumbs.
  • Serve with a side of steamed vegetables or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
  • To make this recipe gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
