Ingredients
Scale
Chicken and Filling
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 4 slices of ham (or your preferred choice of meat)
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
Breading and Seasoning
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Cooking Fats
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the chicken later.
- Prepare chicken rolls: Lay the chicken breasts flat and place a slice of ham and Swiss cheese on each. Roll up carefully to enclose the filling, securing with toothpicks if needed.
- Set up breading stations: In one shallow dish, mix flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Place beaten eggs in a second dish, and breadcrumbs in a third.
- Bread the chicken rolls: Coat each roll first in the flour mixture, then dip into the eggs, and finally roll in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to form an even crust.
- Pan-fry chicken rolls: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add chicken rolls and cook 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Bake to finish cooking: Transfer browned rolls to a baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes until chicken is cooked through and cheese melts completely.
Notes
- Use toothpicks to keep the chicken rolls securely closed during cooking to prevent filling leakage.
- Make sure the chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for safety.
- For a crispier crust, you can double-dip the chicken rolls in the egg and breadcrumbs.
- Serve with a side of steamed vegetables or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
- To make this recipe gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
