Ingredients
Scale
Puff Pastry
- 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed (17.3 oz)
Filling
- 10 oz sliced deli ham
- 8 oz Gruyère cheese slices
- 2.7 fl oz Dijon mustard (optional)
Toppings
- 1 large egg, whisked
- Everything bagel seasoning (optional)
Instructions
- Thaw Puff Pastry: Remove the puff pastry sheets from their packaging and allow them to thaw until they become pliable and easy to work with.
- Prepare Oven and Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Cut Pastry Sheets: If needed, roll out each puff pastry sheet slightly to smooth it out. Then, slice each sheet into six equal rectangles using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, aiming for 12 pieces total.
- Apply Egg Wash and Mustard: Lightly brush the edges of each pastry rectangle with the whisked egg. Then spread a small amount of Dijon mustard in the center area of each pastry piece, according to preference.
- Add Filling: Place one slice of Gruyère cheese and a folded slice of deli ham on top of the mustard-covered center on each pastry rectangle.
- Fold and Seal: Fold one corner of the pastry toward the center over the filling, then fold the opposite corner over, fully enclosing the ham and cheese. Press the edges gently but firmly to seal the pastry and prevent filling from leaking during baking.
- Prepare for Baking: Transfer all sealed pastries onto the lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining whisked egg for a golden finish, then sprinkle everything bagel seasoning over them if desired.
- Bake: Bake the pastries in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes or until they puff up, turn golden brown, and the cheese inside is melted and bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the baked pastries from the oven and allow them to cool slightly. Serve warm for the best taste and texture experience.
Notes
- Thaw puff pastry just until pliable to avoid it becoming sticky or tearing when working with it.
- Dijon mustard adds a nice tang but can be omitted or substituted to suit taste preferences.
- Ensure the pastry edges are sealed well to keep the filling from leaking.
- Everything bagel seasoning adds delicious flavor and crunch but is also optional.
- These pastries are best served warm on the day they are baked.
