Ingredients
Scale
Fish & Seasoning
- 4 white fish fillets (such as cod, tilapia, or halibut)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Cooking Fats and Flavorings
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce Ingredients
- Juice of 1 lemon (about 2 tablespoons)
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1/4 cup chicken broth or white wine
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- Lemon slices for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Season the Fish: Pat the fish fillets dry using paper towels to remove excess moisture. Season both sides generously with salt and black pepper to enhance flavor during cooking.
- Cook the Fish: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the fish fillets to the pan and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until the fish develops a golden crust and is just cooked through. Remove the fish from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
- Prepare the Sauce: Lower the heat to medium-low and add butter to the same skillet. Once melted, add the minced garlic and sauté for 30 to 60 seconds until fragrant but not browned, to avoid bitterness.
- Deglaze and Simmer: Stir in lemon juice, lemon zest, chicken broth or white wine, and red pepper flakes if using. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 2–3 minutes, scraping any browned bits from the pan bottom to incorporate rich flavor into the sauce.
- Reheat the Fish: Return the fish fillets to the skillet and spoon the sauce over the top to coat. Simmer gently for another 1–2 minutes, ensuring the fish reheats and soaks up the lemon garlic sauce.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the fish and garnish with lemon slices if desired. Serve immediately while warm and flavorful.
Notes
- Choose firm, fresh white fish fillets like cod or halibut for the best texture.
- Adjust red pepper flakes to taste to control the spice level or omit for a milder dish.
- Using chicken broth or white wine adds depth to the sauce, but water can be substituted if needed.
- Be careful not to overcook the fish to maintain its flaky and moist texture.
- Serve with steamed vegetables or a light salad for a balanced meal.
