Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 1½ pounds lean ground beef
- ¼ cup condensed beef broth
- ½ cup Panko bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Mushroom-Onion Topping
- 2 tablespoons salted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 4 ounces mushrooms, thinly sliced
For the Sauce
- ¼ cup condensed beef broth
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
- ½ cup water
Instructions
- Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In a 12-inch skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add thinly sliced onions and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Add mushrooms and cook until the liquid has mostly evaporated. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and set aside.
- Prepare Beef Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ¼ cup beef broth, Panko bread crumbs, egg, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Shape the mixture into six 4-inch diameter patties.
- Make the Sauce Mixture: In a small bowl, whisk the flour and 2 tablespoons of beef broth until smooth. Add the remaining beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard powder, and water; whisk to combine thoroughly.
- Brown the Patties: Return the skillet to medium heat and brown half of the beef patties for 2 minutes on each side, not cooking them through. Transfer these to a plate and repeat with the remaining patties.
- Combine and Simmer: Place all beef patties back into the skillet. Top evenly with the sautéed onion and mushroom mixture. Pour the sauce mixture over the patties, ensuring even coverage.
- Simmer Covered: Bring the skillet to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Cover and cook for 14 to 20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through completely and the sauce thickens.
- Serve: Spoon the Salisbury steaks with their mushroom-onion gravy over mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a classic presentation and enjoy your hearty meal.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef for a healthier option and to reduce grease in the skillet.
- Do not overmix the beef mixture to keep patties tender.
- The sauce can be thickened further by simmering uncovered for a few more minutes if desired.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute Panko bread crumbs with gluten-free crumbs.
- Leftover Salisbury steak reheats well and can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
