Description

This rich and creamy Christmas Cinnamon Eggnog is the perfect festive drink to warm up your holiday celebrations. Made with milk, cream, eggs, and a blend of warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, this traditional eggnog recipe is enhanced with a hint of rum for an optional spirited touch. Smooth, flavorful, and easy to prepare, it’s ideal for serving chilled at your holiday parties or cozy winter nights.

Ingredients

Scale

Dairy

  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Eggnog Base

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Optional

  • 1/2 cup rum (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat Milk and Cream: In a saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream and warm over medium heat until hot but not boiling, preparing the base for the eggnog.
  2. Whisk Eggs and Sugar: In a separate bowl, vigorously whisk the large eggs and sugar together until the mixture becomes pale and slightly thickened to ensure a smooth texture.
  3. Temper the Eggs: Gradually pour the warm milk and cream mixture into the egg and sugar mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from curdling.
  4. Return to Heat: Pour the combined mixture back into the saucepan and place it over low heat to cook gently without boiling.
  5. Add Flavorings: Stir in the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg to infuse the liquid with warm holiday spices.
  6. Cook Until Thickened: Continue cooking the mixture on low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon.
  7. Remove from Heat and Add Rum: Take the saucepan off the heat and stir in the optional rum for a festive kick.
  8. Cool and Refrigerate: Allow the eggnog to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until chilled, usually at least 2 hours.
  9. Serve and Garnish: Serve the chilled eggnog in glasses, garnished with a sprinkle of extra ground cinnamon for a festive touch.

Notes

  • If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum altogether.
  • Make sure to whisk constantly during cooking to avoid scrambling the eggs.
  • Use fresh, high-quality eggs for best flavor and safety.
  • Refrigerate for several hours or overnight to let flavors meld and chill thoroughly.
  • Serve in chilled glasses to keep the eggnog cool longer.
